Rux Energy Founder & CEO Dr Jehan Kanga recorded the InnovationAus Commercial Disco podcast to talk about the renewed momentum behind hydrogen – and the technology that could help unlock its potential.

The conversation comes at an exciting moment for the field. In 2025, Australian Professor Richard Robson shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for pioneering work on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs): remarkable crystalline materials with nanoscale pores capable of capturing and storing gases.

At Rux, we’re turning that science into solutions with giga scale energy security and environmental impact, delivering breakthrough safety and efficiency.

Our advanced nanoporous MOF materials are being developed to tackle one of hydrogen’s biggest challenges: how to store and transport it safely and efficiently to decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors such as shipping, construction, long-haul transport, steelmaking and heavy manufacturing.

When Rux began 5 years ago, we were producing our MOF materials by the gram.

Today, we can manufacture 20 kilograms of MOF per day.

The next target is 200kg. Then 2 tonnes. Then 20 tonnes. Then 200 tonnes, using our patent green manufacturing processes.

As Jehan puts it:

“It’s just 10x and 10x and 10x. It’s 10x every couple of years and [we will] just not stop.”

It’s taken an extraordinary amount of work to get here – scaling our advanced nanoporous MOF materials while maintaining and improving its performance along the way, and building in circular innovations to find ways to utilise waste from steelmaking and other industries.

And as we scale, we help slash the cost of green hydrogen by solving the storage and transport challenge, making green hydrogen 30% cheaper than diesel.

For Australia, the opportunity is enormous: turning our abundant renewable solar and wind energy resources into clean Australian made hydrogen fuel energy that can be stored, moved and ultimately used where it matters most. This means high value regional green hydrogen fuel production, hydrogen storage and advanced manufacturing jobs, to support our work end to end along the supply chain.
