We’re proud to have played a key role in the success of the Hydrogen Zero Emission Maritime (HyZEM) project – a UK–Australia collaboration tackling one of the most critical barriers to maritime decarbonisation: hydrogen storage at sea.

Hydrogen holds enormous promise as a clean fuel for vessels, but safely storing enough of it onboard maritime vessels without compromising space, weight, or stability has remained a major engineering challenge. Through HyZEM, we’ve worked alongside the National Composites Centre (NCC) and industry partners Chartwell Marine, Duodrive, Steamology and the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult and Connected Places Catapult, across hydrogen technology stacks from fuel cell generators to storage and distribution and energy delivery on vessel to turn that challenge into a tangible solution.

Together, we’ve developed and demonstrated the world’s first Type-V (linerless), MOF-enhanced cryogenic hydrogen storage prototype for maritime use.

This is more than a technical milestone, it’s a step toward enabling hydrogen-powered operations in maritime, one of the fastest-growing and hardest-to-abate sectors,, supporting offshore wind and the broader energy transition.

A huge thank you to Innovate UK and DCCEEW for funding the projects and our partners for their collaboration, expertise, and shared innovations.
